Due to the timing of Easter we had a slightly smaller entry than usual for our Letchworth Bowl last night, but no less keenly fought. 2 groups each of 5 pairs. Goup A was won by Ed Hawke who played with a swapping Bev Boag and Giles Stimson- maybe it was the advantage of having such fresh players that got Ed over the line first in this group. … Group B was also close with the final match seeing Ian Mettam + Andy Passey take on Shiloh Wu + Matt Watson. Both pairs started the game on a 25 points (out of a maximum of 27) and the winner would win the group. Hard hitting and great court coverage by Shiloh could not stop Ian and Andy nipping the game 9-6 to go through to the final. Ed was looking to win for a third year in a row (never done before), and in a similar game to their ‘semi final’ we watched as Ian and Andy were pelted with rockets coming from Ed, and backup steady play from Giles. With the clock ticking for both the pies in the pub and the bookings on the court, a very close game was eventually won by Andy and Ian. Amazingly for both of them, it was the first time either of these stalwarts have won the cup- Well done! For the first time in many years we were able to play out a game of 2nd vs 2nd from each group, 3rd vs 3rd etc and without needing to go into further details congrats to David and Ross…. as David so eloquently put it…. ‘some teams left with nothing’!
